Hot cakes on a cold morning

Superintendent surprises students with pancake ritual

Groggy students and early-birds alike were astonished to be greeted Wednesday by Superintendent Andrew Kim, Chef Mario Perez and College and Career Advisor Michelle Gonzalez with a table stacked with fresh pancakes.

“It started about three years ago on a weather make-up day,” Kim said. “A basketball player named Carter (DeFries) told me go get some free pancakes. It was National Pancake Day, and it gave me the idea to turn around allow the students in school to enjoy it as well.”

This spontaneous surprise usually happens at least once a year, aimed to be on National Pancake Day. Although Kim is usually busy on the day, he still makes sure to swing by sometime after to brighten up some students’ morning.

“I think it’s kind of awesome that we get free pancakes out of nowhere,” sophomore Kevon Vernon said. “I almost didn’t even get out of bed this morning, but obviously I’m glad I did.”
