For some teachers, the idea of catching a break during a busy day might seem impossible.

The interior design students redesigned and created something new that helps teachers unwind, evidenced by the strong paint smell and scattered furniture when entering the room the teacher’s lounge. The room previously served as the in-school suspension room until the opening of Pieper High School reduced the population and sent ISS back into the downstairs D wing.

When school started, Interior Design II Brianna Saad and Shauna Douglass’ classes felt the teachers’ lounge needed a new look, and they took on the responsibility of planning and executing a remodel.

The A-wing teachers’ lounge is a space with a couple chairs, half empty shelves, as well as some paint on the wall that will turn into something that the students hope creates a nice space for teachers. The interior team decided on a theme that could make the room a calm place to be, featuring a green and white paint theme on walls.

“PTA and Douglass sponsored and designed it while interior design is executing it,” Saad said. “The theme of it, you could say, is a modern oasis.”

The lounge adds a sense of connection and collaboration among staff members and provides an undisturbed space.

With the news breaking that the teachers lounge is getting redone, some teachers welcomed the new change to their space.

“Some of them are probably excited that a place is getting designed for them to relax,” Saad said. “The students are excited to create a space for the teachers that they love.”
