In the newly popular show “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” there was a lot to unpack.

If you’re not familiar with Dahmer, here’s some insight on who he was. Jeffrey Dahmer, a.k.a the “Milwaukee Cannibal” or the “Milwaukee Monster”,  was an American serial killer who committed the murder of and dismemberment of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

Controversy popped up when the show appeared.

Rita Isabell, the sister of one of Dahmer’s victims, said that she was “bothered” by the dramatic effect that was added to her in the show. She claims that she felt as if Netflix did not ask how she would feel about it being made. Some of Dahmer’s victims’ families and Dahmer’s family felt “retraumatized” from the show.

Evan Peters (American Horror Story), who played Dahmer, said that it’s to highlight the story of what he did.

“It’s the repercussions, it’s how society and our system failed to stop him multiple times because of racism, homophobia,” Peters said.

Netflix sparked another controversy by tagging the show under LGBTQ. People did not agree with Netflix on this one.

” I understand why they did it, but it’s not the representation we’re looking for.” Many were tweeting about this with rage at Netflix. Later, Netflix did remove the tag, but it’s unclear when it was removed.

Netflix described this miniseries by “giving these people a voice”, but the victims’ families didn’t see it that way.

Eric Perry, one of the cousins of Dahmer’s victims, Errol Lindsey,  claims that he’s been retraumatized all over again. He understands that true crime is big right now but he doesn’t see the need for so many movies/shows/documentaries about the story.
