The Rangers made history as they clinched the first ever state championship in the schools history after four previous visits to Jerry’s World, putting their names into the record books. The team will be recognized tonight at 6 p.m. at Ranger Stadium.
Football started off slow in the first quarter as they allowed Highland Park to score an early touchdown to go up 7-0. The team then traveled down the field into the red zone where they were able to answer back with a field goal. The Ranger defense used that momentum to stop Highland park and get another field goal to make the score 6-7.
Highland Park answered back with a 70 yard touchdown pass to go up 14-6 late in the first quarter. The momentum quickly swung to the Rangers as senior cornerback Julian Colunga got a huge pick six to end the first quarter 13-14. The Rangers came out hot in the second quarter as senior quarterback Cade Spradling connected with his main target Brody Day on a 30 yard passing touchdown to go up 20-14. Both teams traded field goals to end the half 23-20.
Coming out of the second half, football shutdown the Highland park offense and were able to capitalize on offense as they got a field goal and a touchdown to make the score 32-20 going into the final quarter. Football had the game from the start of the fourth quarter and finished off the game as 5A Division 1 state champions.
Spradling was the Offensive State MVP with 61 passing yards and 1 touchdown; he also had 157 yards rushing and a touchdown. To end the season Spradling was the leading passer with 81 completions for 1,326 yards two interceptions and 19 touchdowns. Spradling was also the leading rusher having 128 carries for 957 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Colunga was the Defensive State MVP after his interception changed the momentum of the game.
Senior RB Brad Sowersby had a big game having 155 yards rushing on the day. Sowersby was second in rushing yards having 128 carries for 835 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Senior Brody Day had 4 receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown. He ended the season off with a total of 58 catches for 1307 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Junior PK Tent Amaya tied the record for the most field goals made in the championship game. Having 4/5 field goals. On the year Amaya scored a total of 82 extra points and 9 field goals.
Defensively, both Spradling and DL Justin Roberts had 1 sack against the scots.
Senior WR/DB PK Moeller had an interception late in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
The 2024-2025 Ranger Football team made a mark in SVHS history taking home the first football state championship for the school.
