The varsity football team beat rival Canyon on Friday with a 14-9 win on the road. The rivalry game sparked high ambitions as both teams looked to raise the Comal Bowl trophy..

The Rangers came out guns blazing in the opening minutes of the game resulting in an early 7-0 lead with a 3-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Nick Akin. The two teams continued to held each other scoreless for the rest of quarter.

The Cougars struck first in the second quarter off a blocked punt and an 18-yard touchdown. Rangers answered back with junior quarterback Levi Williams launching a 40-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Trevon Moehrig- Woodard as both teams headed into the locker rooms to close out the first half with the Rangers leading 14-6.

Canyon kicker Jacob Martinez kicked a 40 yard field goal bringing the score to 14-9 in the final minutes of the third quarter.

The defensive struggle kept the fourth quarter scoreless. Senior cornerback Mason Pierce made a clutch interception in the final seconds of the game on the Rangers own 12-yard line to prevent the Cougars comeback. Junior quarterback Levi Williams led the team with 85 passing yards and 1 touchdown along with a team high 57 yards rushing.

The team looks to take on powerhouse Judson at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 in Rutledge Stadium.
