On a Friday night Mason Pierce is asked to carry a heavy load. Starting at cornerback on the varsity football team, Pierce is asked to guard the opposing team’s best athletes in arguably the toughest district in Texas. While this might be a big enough task for most, Pierce is also playing wide receiver for the team and is on multiple special teams.

“Coach asked me to fulfill the role of playing both ways and I was all for it if it was what they believed would help the team.” said Pierce

Pierce is not only fulfilling his role but is excelling. He currently leads the team with five interceptions and is  third in receiving with 226 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Strong play like this is what has gotten Pierce an offer to go play football at Colorado School of Mines while also garnering attention from other schools such as Abilene Christian, Mary Hardin Baylor, and Sam Houston St.

While Pierce is receiving great attention in football, his athletic prowess doesn’t end there. Pierce is a two sport athlete who holds an offer to go play baseball at Incarnate Word University and is being looked at by other division one schools such as the University of Houston and Rice University.

“It’s really a blessing to have the opportunity to play both if I wanted to,” said Pierce “I just try to be patient and have trust in God to take me wherever his plan leads me.”

Much like in football, Pierce is expected to be a leader and key contributor on the baseball team.

Pierce is preparing to go into his third year starting on the varsity baseball team coming off a solid outing last season in which he finished with a .333 batting average.

As he continues on with the football season and the eventual baseball season to come, Pierce has been able to handle the pressure of knowing scouts and recruiters are watching with little trouble.

“I definitely know that (the scouts) are watching but I don’t worry about it when I’m playing because I’m so focused on just playing” said Pierce.

As for now Pierce’s main focus is the conclusion of the regular season in football and making  a deep playoff run with the team. Time will only tell what else is in store for the Rangers two sport star.
