Movies have always been very important to society. Even before movies that could capture sound, they’ve been able to capture moments and tell stories that words simply can’t. 2017 was full of new things, including music, fashion, trends, and, most importantly, movies. Here are the top five movies of last year.

  1. La La Land- Sebastian, who’s played by Ryan Gosling, and Mia, played by Emma Stone, are drawn together by their passions and dreams, Sebastian’s for music and Mias for acting. While navigating their dreams, they fall in love. Even if you’re not into musicals, this movie is sure to bring out anyone’s inner romantic. Grossing at 151.1 million dollars, director Damien Chazelle drew in a very diverse crowd to the theatre to see his movie.
  2. Dunkirk- Grossing at 188.37 million dollars, director Christopher Nolan tells a story that many didn’t know about. In May 1940, during World War II Germany advances into France and trap allied troops on the beach of Dunkirk. The movie follows the story of a few men in particular, illustrating the hardship and struggle these troops went through.
  3. Get Out- Possibly one of the most relevant films of 2017, directed by Jordan Peele, as it combines horror with the reality of racism in America. Grossing at 175.48 million dollars, this movie follows the story of Chris Washington, a black man played by Daniel Kaluuya. Chris is dating Rose Armitage, played by a white woman Allison Williams. Chris agrees to meet Rose’s parents. When they arrive, Chris notices that all the servants in the house are black and act strangely.
  4. Moonlight- Another socially relevant film directed by Barry Jenkins, this movie follows the story of “Little” who grows up in Liberty City, Miami. Growing up with a crack addicted mother and no father, he struggles with his sexuality, personal relationships and his career. This movie speaks to the issued that’s often looked past of children growing up in appropriate living conditions, and shows the effects of having no family support. Grossing at 56.1 million dollars, this movie carries such a deep meaning and is sure to touch anyone who watches it.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi- In this timeless series directed by Rian Johnson, Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, lives in peaceful solidarity until Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, comes to him to learn the way of the force. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, and General Hux, played by Domhnall Gleeson, lead the First Order in a mission to defeat Leia, played by the late and great Carrie Fisher, and the Resistance with hopes to take over the galaxy. With a gross of $523.2 million, the movie combines romance, action, adventure and tragedy to make for a great movie.
