After trailing New Braunfels by three strokes on the first day, boys varsity golf made a comeback to win the District 27-6A championship Wednesday.

“The team played very well over this past meet, and I’m very proud of the hard work and effort this weekend,” head coach Jason Pape said.

Junior Tyler Horn and senior Evan Perez led the team on Monday when the team score of 321 fell second behind New Braunfels’ 313. On Wednesday, New Braunfels scored 339 behind the Rangers’ 315 for team totals of 652 for New Braunfels and 636 for Smithson Valley.

Individually, the tournament ended with a three-way second place tie behind New Braunfels golfer Carson Gallaher (150). Canyon golfer Chris Espinoza, Horn and Perez all scored 154.

In the first round, a 5-stroke hole eliminated Horn while Perez and Espinoza hit 3. In the last hole, Perez finished with 5 compared to Espinoza’s 6, putting Perez at second.

The next tournament is the region meet on April 23-26 at The Republic Golf Course.
