As the season is about to come to an end, the color guard is looking for new recruits. The guard will have two mini flag camps at the SVHS band hall from 4:30-6 p.m. The first camp was Friday, April 27. The second camp will be on Thursday, May 17.

At the flag camp, the guard instructor and the current members will teach flag basics and fundamentals along with a small dance routine, preparing for audition week which will be May 21 – May 25 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the actual auditions on Saturday May 26 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

No experience is required as everyone will be taught what they need to know. Those who would like to attend the flag camps and tryouts must dress to workout. This includes shorts, a t- shirt and tennis or jazz shoes. Although color guard is a part of the band, it is not necessary to play an instrument to be in the color guard.

The color guard uses a variety of equipment, such as flags, rifles and sabres, to make a visual presentation in a show. In the fall, color guard performs with the marching band during football halftime and attends competitions.

At the end of football season, the color guard has its own performance and competition season called Winter Guard. It is almost everything that is done in the fall minus the band and the outside performances.

The class period for color guard counts as a PE and Fine Arts credit towards graduation credits.

You can join the flag camps to try out or if you want to see if you would be interested in joining color guard.
