After a 7-3 performance in tournament action in November and December, the girls basketball team already claimed three district wins and boasts a 16-4 record.

The girls – considered a relatively young squad based on stat lines – dominated regional competition by taking down powerhouses San Antonio Incarnate Word and San Antonio Madison.

A solid outing in tournament play bade well  as they tried to find a rhythm after a loss to Round Rock Westwood. They currently are in six-game winning streak heading into Christmas break.

“I believe all of our hard work and preparation has led to our success as a team,” junior guard Tanyse Moehrig said.

Junior Anika McGarity leads the way and became a floor general, averaging 11.9 points per game while hauling in about two rebounds per game. The team finds solid contributions from shooting guard Moehrig (10.1 PPG) and senior Ashley Adaszczyk (10.3 PPG).

Multiple role players have provided a speed and scoring boosts for the team, which makes it an offensive threat. Senior Trinity Garrett and Gabby Elliott provided strong defense on the boards.

“We’re a young team that has been working hard and getting better each and everyday. I’m looking forward to our upcoming district opponents,” McGarity said.

The team looks to take on district opponent Canyon Friday at 7 p.m. in the Cougar Den.
