Realignment to bring new, familiar faces to district for 2024-26

In this week’s coaches show on Rangers Network, athletic director Larry Hill and assistant athletic director Melissa Miler discuss the UIL realignment announced Feb. 1.

With the new UIL realignment released, district competition for all teams will change in the next two years, and some of those faces will be familiar and some not so much.

Changes that were significant to this grouping include: New Braunfels dropping from 6A to 5A; Boerne rising from 4A to 5A; and Canyon going from 5A to 6A. The number of schools in 5A are 252 with an enrollment range of 1,315-2,274 students.

Football will move to Region IV and will face current district competitors Boerne Champion, Seguin, and San Antonio MacArthur A familiar opponent, New Braunfels, drops from 6A into District 13, and Canyon moves up to 6A.  Pieper makes the move from Divison II to Division I, and realignment pulled Victoria East into the mix.

In every other sport and UIL academics, district competition will include against Boerne, Beorne Champion, Pieper, Kerrville Tivy, New Braunfels, Alamo Heights, San Antonio Veterans Memorial and San Antonio Wagner.

On Rangers Network’s coaches show, assistant athletic director Melissa Miller noted that an increase in the number of teams in the district will result in a cut in the number of preseason games for teams other than football.

Considering these changes, athletes believe the new teams do not affect them too much.

“The realignment doesn’t have much of an impact on me mentally because no matter the team we play, I’m gonna aim for success,” junior baseball player Andrew Bonner

Others think the new teams will bring a new level of competition.

“I think that the games are going to be a lot tougher with the new teams, which we play in the fall like Boerne Champion,” sophomore varsity basketball player Cyanna Cavazos said.
