More than one out of ten people in the world deal with serious mental health issues, according to the World Health Organization. In the USA that number is one in five. Thursday is Recognized as World Mental Health Day to recognize and support those who struggle.
Because young adults aged 18-25 have the highest rate of serious mental illness at 36.2%, according to the National Institute of Mental Health everyone should support those who suffer with these issues and bring attention to the fact that it matters..
One of the goals of World Mental Health day is to prevent risks of depression, burnout, addiction and anxiety. Those risks include family history, stressful life events, substance abuse, childhood trauma and some medications. These conditions are a serious medical issue, and it is okay to recognize when someone has a problem. Victims should seek support to improve their situation, and friends, family, and co-workers should educate themselves about the symptoms and provide support.
Another goal of the day is to encourage people to take care of themselves. People can support themselves by getting enough sleep, exercising and eating a balanced diet. One must also set priorities and emphasize relaxation.
A third goal is to support people in crisis. Others can do so by being non judgmental by avoiding phrases such as “they should” or “should not”, expressing support to those in need, validating their emotions and mostly treating them with respect. Those who need help should do these things and talk to a primary care doctor. In emergency situations, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Another option is to call or text 988 Suicide and Crisis lifeline for 24 hour support by a trained counselor.
Getting over it and dealing with it in private is the worst thing people could do. Being alone when at an all time low can be even more harmful and dangerous to those who are seriously suffering. Those who are suffering with these problems and issues should express that they need help. World Mental Health Day is a good reminder to step up and support others.
World Mental Health Day is right around the corner and yet people battle with, “Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are pervasive in workplaces globally, impacting productivity, attendance, and overall performance.” WFMH President Tsuyoshi Akiyama said.
Mental health is important because people don’t always know if someone around them is dealing with issues or not. Most people spend most of their time working or in school then doing another activity according to the World Federation for Mental Health. These pressures and builds of stress can lead to many other effects or harm to people in need. That’s why focusing on mental health by going to someone and finding good habits is important.
Also 10-15% of employees and students deal with serious mental health issues. So these problems and issues are very common. Supporting mental health day will not only benefit just those in need but friends, teachers, and family members.
