Mae Jemison (1965-) Jemison is well-known for her contributions to astronautics for becoming the first African-American woman to travel to space in 1992, leading to her induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and International Space Hall of Fame. Shortly after joining the Peace Corps, she served as a medical officer in Africa and a Cambodia refugee camp and later opened her own private practice. After retiring from her career in space, Jemison served on the Board of Directors for organizations like the Texas Medical Center and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, earning her a place in the National Medical Association Hall of Fame.
