Having a pet can benefit students in a number of ways, it has been discovered that owning a pet can reduce great amounts of stress. Whether it be a dog or a cat or even a hamster’ the comforting thought of having a loving, loyal companion at your side is enough to push aside any trouble.

“You will never meet a more loyal critter in your lifetime,”  President of the Bulverde Animal Humane Society, Thomas Blacklock said.

The Bulverde Animal shelter has up to 40 dogs and 120 cats that desperately need homes. Though they are well taken care of, no pet should spend the rest of its life without a loving family. Adding a new companion into the family can be life changing, and for the better as well.

Other than posing as a stress reliever, having a dog or a cat can improve your mood, encourage you to acquire fresh air and exercise, help with social support, shave off loneliness and provide unconditional love.

Unfortunately, there are people who suffer from pet allergies, or are unable to provide a suitable atmosphere for their beloved companions, but that still doesn’t mean they are unable to help out. Donations of pet supplies are always appreciated and volunteers are always wanted to make sure these animals have the opportunity to live a long, healthy, happy life.

“I don’t have a pet, but I still can’t help but love them” freshman Brooklyn Webster said. “Having a pet is amazing, they are so sweet and all they ask for is food and love”.

Being a high school student in general can be stressful, always worrying about upcoming tests or if you will be able to finish an important assignment in time. It feels like the whole world might be crashing down on you without anything to help it. However, simply stepping away from what might be troubling you and spending time with your pet could lift your spirits and put you in a better mind set. Whether it’s taking them for a walk, playing with them, or patting them on the head, it can overwhelm you with love and reassurance.

“I love coming home to my dogs, it’s nice to come home to smiling faces and wagging tails” biology teacher Katherine Ebner said. “It’s like all my anxiety is washed away”.
