Senior Social Sunday
FCCLA members spend a day with senior citizens

On Sunday, September 26, members of FCCLA spent a day with the senior citizens at the Bulverde/Spring Branch Activity Center. The theme for the day was “You’ve got a friend in me”, and both the seniors and students had a fantastic time.
“I liked talking to all of the seniors and getting to know their stories,” junior Ashley Villarreal said.
The day consisted of board games, cards, “UNO”, a photobooth, lots of stories and snacks. Shauna Douglass, the head of the FCCLA program, along with 18 other students, worked to plan a fun-filled day for the seniors.
“FCCLA is the only national organization that has a central focus on family and community,” Douglass said.
FCCLA focuses on service projects that highlight family and benefit the community, doing projects such as Senior Social Sunday and hosting Breakfast with Santa. They feel it is important to bring the community together.
“It is important for high schoolers to form relationships with seniors who live far away from their grandchildren,” Douglass said.
Senior Social Sundays happen the last Sunday of each month, so FCCLA members get to build relationships with the seniors that they meet.
“It is important for us to connect with our seniors because it helps us come together and celebrate the differences and changes that each generation has lived through,” senior Arali Garcia said.
