School adding wrestling for athletes

Starting next fall, the school will add wrestling as a sport. This will be the twelfth sport the school will have to offer for athletes next season.

With the addition of the wrestling, several things need to be accomplished before the team can get rolling, such as hiring a head coach and getting a proper practicing area.

“There are several steps that still have to be done until we can officially declare that the team is ready to practice and for competition” Athletic Director Larry Hill said.

The team also needs to work out a schedule for the upcoming season, but it does have a district already in place in which to compete.

“The district is more centered around teams from up in the Austin area,” Hill said.

As of right now, the district includes teams such as Lehman, Hays and Lockhart from the Austin area, in addition to more local teams such as Clemens, Canyon and Alamo Heights.

Aside from technical details that need to worked out, there is a positive buzz around the school for the addition of wrestling.

“I have trained in the wrestling field for about three years,” sophomore Kaleb Reed said. “It’s an amazing sport, and I think it will greatly benefit the school”

The sport will be open to both boys and girls, and the season will take place starting late in the fall semester and end in February.

“I think the sport will be very good for the school and will give a good opportunity to compete with other teams in a different sport,” Reed said.

Wrestling will add a new opportunity for athletes at the school to showcase their skills aside from the regular sports such as football or basketball.
