Swim team gathers hardware at state meet
Girls 400 freestyle relay places second at state
February 21, 2023
The girls 400 freestyle relay team won silver at the 2023 UIL Swim & Dive State Meet Saturday while senior Colin Doyle seized an unexpected bronze in the 100 buttefly.
Junior Kelechi Nwaeze and seniors Catherine Frankson, Abigail Miller and Vanessa Weatherford took second place behind Lubbock in the Class 5A finals.
As an individual, Weatherford placed fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free. She also placed fifth the 200 medley relay with Nwaeze, Frankson and Miller.
Doyle, who signed to swim at the University of Texas at Permian Basin, started as the sixth seed at state.
“I really wasn’t thinking much going into it,” senior Colin Doyle said. “If I’m seeded sixth, I might as well go all out in the first 50 and see what I have back in the tank, and it was enough.
“That was points and a medal for our team. To get third was amazing.”
