Hangin’ with some new Peeps
Easter basket candy now comes as more tasty cereal
April 6, 2023
Take a cup of Lucky Charms, throw in some Cheerios and then pour melted Peeps over all of that.
That’s the best way to describe Kellogg’s Peeps cereal, which popped up again on store shelves this spring. It is a marshmallow-flavor crisp cereal with marshmallow bits shaped as Peeps.
The sugar-coated chicks and bunnies candy, which some claim is too sugary and sticky, typically is not welcome fare in Easter baskets, but this cereal would be more popular. The marshmallow flavor is still prominent, and a perk is the marshmallow texture doesn’t stick to teeth or fingers.
And just in case that’s not enough marshmallow, the cereal makes for a tasty marshmallow treat (think Rice Krispies treats).
In addition to its sugar overload, however, this cereal also tends to get soggy faster than others. After a minute, it turned to mush with bunny and chick shaped marshmallows waiting for something to happen.
Another popular cereal that turns to mush, Raisin Bran has 190 calories, zero grams of saturated fat, 200 milligrams of sodium and 17 grams of sugar. Peeps cereal consists of 150 calories, zero grams of saturated fat, 170 milligrams of sodium and 17 grams of sugar, per serving.
To put it in perspective, a single Peep candy contains 6.8 grams of sugar and 140 calories.
The Peeps cereal includes at least three types of sugar. They are sugar, corn syrup, and modified corn stack dextrose. One controversial ingredient is Red 40, a synthetic color dye. Even though many feel Red 40 is hazardous to consume, the Food and Drug Administration FDA ruled it safe for public consumption.
Rumors are that due to popular demand, the cereal will be available year round or during other holidays, such as Halloween pumpkins and Christmas gingerbread men.
The cereal might be inspired by the Peeps candy, but you don’t have to like Peeps to like Peeps cereal.
