After going undefeated in 27 games, girls soccer lost 1-2  in the state semifinals against Grapevine Thursday in Georgetown.

Senior Sabrina Taber kicked the game off in the first 30 seconds with a goal – the quickest scored goal in the state tournament since 2016.

Coach Jason Adkins and his team show off their medals and trophy as state semifinalists. This was the first time in program history that the team reached the state tournament.

Grapevine’s forward, senior Theresa McCullough, scored the goal to tie and send the game into overtime, something the Rangers had not experienced this season.

‘’When they scored their goal to tie up the game, my heart dropped,” senior Emmy Lambson said, “and when the buzzer went off sending it to overtime, I knew that we had to play our hearts out and we had to leave our all on that field.”

McCullough scored again in overtime to close out the game.

Grapevine (25-3-2)  has been to state six times in the last nine years (2015, 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023).

They will head into the state finals Saturday, at 11 a.m. against Frisco (22-2-2).

While the season did not end the way the Rangers wanted it, they took pride in making history.

“We accomplished more than we could think of, and I could not be more proud of this team and what we represented this season,” Lambson said. “We may not have won state, but this season broke history, and there is nothing that I regret this season.”

Senior Kaili Castillo called the ending bittersweet.

“In all honesty, not only did I hope this team would make it to the state tournament but I wholeheartedly expected it,” she said. “You could see the passion and will to win in every single player, and ultimately I think it came down to just playing for the girl next to you. We did it for each other.”
