The case of Romo v Prescott
November 2, 2016
After a brutal hit from Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril in their preseason matchup, Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo was placed on the Injured Reserve, and it seemed to many that another season would be wasted due to lack of leadership at the position.
For years, America’s team has had all the pieces needed to make a long run into the playoffs. But each year Romo goes down early, and the momentum from a hot start fades away.
Now the Cowboys finally have a quarterback who can win when Romo is out. After a close loss in his first regular season game of his career, rookie Dak Prescott has led the team on a five-game winning streak, and the schedule during this streak was no walk in the park. Prescott led the team to a convincing victory at Green Bay, who is always a contender for the whole thing.
Now Romo is almost ready to return to his team. But after two completely different answers in the last two weeks from Owner/GM Jerry Jones on who will start once the veteran has recovered, fans are unsure whose team it is at this point.
There’s not much doubt Romo can succeed with this team, but how could Jones justify removing the young quarterback after all his success?
Well, it goes back to when Prescott first showed he can be the next franchise quarterback for the Cowboys. After the rookie’s first signs of success, Jones was asked what will happen when Romo returns, and the Cowboys’ monarch told reporters it was still Romo’s team.
It will be important for the Cowboys that once Romo returns, he starts. This will show Dak, who is the quarterback of the future for Dallas, that he can trust Jones and that as the quarterback of this team he will be cared for.
Prescott has great potential and complements it with the maturity of a veteran play caller. This is why Cowboys’ fans should not fear Dak causing a scene and asking for a trade. And who knows? With Romo’s health record, Prescott may be back at under center within a few weeks.
