She planned, put up posters and publicized. Yet, senior Lauren Mangold is not done, because this year she is the brains behind the FAC’s homeless drive that ends Nov. 8.

“It makes me feel good to know that I am helping the homeless.” Mangold said. “The first drive started last year, and I felt moved to help the homeless.”

Family and Community Services accepts bandages, combs, water, gloves, blankets, deodorant, socks, nail clippers and other toiletries. Ever $5 spent is worth two service hours, and every $10  is five hours, but donors have to bring the receipt to qualify.

“Even though you’re donating for hours, you’re still helping the homeless,”  FACS coordinator Lori Niles said. “So many people donated blankets from the blanket drive that there were so many extra we are giving them to the homeless too.”

Haven for Hope, a nonprofit founded by Kenny Wilson, in downtown San Antonio offers the homeless a place to stay. Mangold will bring the care packages to Haven for Hope and all around the city, wherever the homeless are, including veterans and children.

“I wish there would be more people willing to help the homeless.” Mangold said. “I started helping the homeless because it helps them feel like they’re living a normal life.”
