Web editor gains power, seen as dictator

LJ Haider, Social Media Editor

The one downside to my all-inspiring job on the newspaper staff is the hierarchy that is oppressive against new journalists simply trying to contribute like any other writer. The “minions” are like servants, answering to the whim of the web editor like Ivan the Terrible.

Before I had taken up my pen and shield to fight in the battle for viewership, our autocratic web editor seemed benevolent at first, kindly outstretching their arms to invite those aspiring editorialists. Little did the rookies know of what awaited them as a member of the magnificent newspaper.

Don’t get me wrong, in no way am I trying to burn the newspaper like that editor burned my dreams. I am simply addressing the issue of our monarchical staff.

Under the constant watch of the web editor, our brow sweats in nervousness and we feel the turbulence as they pass by. The two other editors act in kind benevolence to us but are really pawns of Ivan the Editor.

But I must set aside my over-dramatization and admit how wonderful our editor is, not only keeping us on track but making sure we have a good laugh every now and then. At times, when an idea I have is struck down, I feel like everyone is against me. But what I’ve been learning is that, good old Ivan, has been trying to get the best out of me. I have to accept the fact that my ideas may not be perfect as I think they are, and that is exactly why she’s a little tough on me.

At the end of the day, our editors really appreciate all we contribute. And she is always there when we are battling a tough story. When one of us stirs up trouble, our grand-beyond-words editors is there to bail us out. Not that we get in a pickle frequently! But, I can’t imagine what hole we’d be in without them.
