Baseball prepares for possible district championship

The baseball team has a big game tonight as it takes on the New Braunfels Unicorns in a game that can be a deciding factor in the district race.

The team enters the game currently tied with Clemens for first place; and with both teams heading into their final game, there is the possibility of a regular season tie for the district championship if both teams win their final games.

“We’re both tied for first do we’ll end up in either first or second,” head coach Chad Koehl said, “But if both teams win then, we will play in a playoff game on Friday at a neutral site against Clemens.”

The team who defeated the Buffaloes in their first matchup of the year lost to Clemens two weeks ago, which put the team in a position for a tie.

While keeping an eye on the Clemens score tonight, the team needs to focus on its current matchup as the Unicorns are no easy opponent. The team needed a seventh inning comeback to defeat the Unicorns 4-3 in their last game.

“ For a big game like this preparation stays the same,” second baseman Mason Pierce said.  “Really we know if we win it, though, our next game will be for the district title.”

On top of all the playoff and district championship implications, it is also ’80s night for the baseball team and it’s senior night. So if there wasn’t an incentive to go before, the chance at winning a $50 gift card for dressing in the best 80’s costume and to see the seniors’ final home games should be able to draw a crowd to the game. The first pitch is tonight at 7 p.m with senior Garrett Egli on the mound.
