The cross country team came out with a victory  at the North East Invitational. The boys varsity team finished in first place with a final score of 36, nearly twenty points ahead of second place.

Junior Clayton Wilkerson lead the way once again coming in second while finishing with a time of 16 minutes and 26 seconds. Wilkerson has continued his success with his second top three finish in the past two meets.

“Clayton has come a long way,” coach Brittney Lanehart said. “He’s dedicated to being elite and an exceptionally tough runner.”

Lanehart knew the course would be a different challenge than the last one the team ran on at Dripping Springs the previous week but wanted to make sure her team stay focused on just running.

“We start being strategic later on in the year,” Lanehart said. “Early on, we’re not worried about the course.”

The girls varsity team finished in fifth at the North East Invitational. While not the result they were aiming for, Coach Lanhart knows the big time finishes are soon to come.

“We’re inexperienced,” Lanehart said. “It’s their first taste of varsity running. We just need to gain confidence in racing.”

Both teams prepare for their next meet at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, September 23rd.
