“Star Wars,” one of the most beloved movie series of all time, released Dec. 16 “The Last Jedi,” which tried to follow “The Force Awakens” success.

This PG-13 movie changed directors from J.J Abrams to Rian Johnson. Fans feared it would be difficult to continue the previous director’s vision. This transition of directors was visible as ideas from the first movie seemed to be missing in the second. An example would be who Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parents were, such as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). However, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) tells Rey her parents are nobodies, letting down the audience.

Another negative was Skywalker’s death in the middle of the trilogy. One would think, as the most iconic Star Wars character of all time, Johnson would at least give him a death toward the end of the trilogy.

One of the worst movie moments of 2017 had to be when Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), who was just shot into space in what everyone thought was her death scene, suddenly displays a use of the force she never used before, lifting her hand and floating through space to survive.

Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) was a new character, and quite honestly, she looked like a fan who won a contest to be in the movie. She provided nothing to the story and distracted beloved character Finn (John Boyega) from accomplishing anything.

Although there were more negatives in this movie, there were some positives. This movie gave several iconic moments, including one of the best lightsaber duels in “Star Wars” history. Kylo Ren and Rey battle some new red stormtroopers in style. Some good moments can only be appreciated in the theater, such as when Kylo Ren tricked Snoke (Andy Serkis, also known as Gollum from “Lord of the Rings”) and murders him using the force.

Kylo overall was the same passionate, conflicted man from the first movie, who is no match to his ruthless and dominant grandpa, Darth Vader.

Overall, this was a good movie but not a good “Star Wars” movie. When you walk out of the theatre, you will feel the adrenaline and believe it is good. However, if you begin to think about the plot, you will see the flaws and the ways that it could’ve been better.
