The boys varsity basketball team captured its first district win of the year last Friday night defeating East Central 65-52. The boys were able to snap a 8 game losing streak led by a 20 point night from senior forward Alex Peavy.

“It was one of the best games we played so far,” said Peavy “hopefully we can carry this momentum for the rest of the season.”

The team was able to get to a quick 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They maintained the seven point lead going into the half up 30-23.

At the end of the third quarter East central brought the game within five, but the boy’s outscored the hornets by eight in the fourth to take home the 65-52 victory.

After struggling for most of the year, the team seemed able to control the tempo of the game allowing them to never let it slip out of hand. While this is a big win for the team, the upcoming week for them looks to be the toughest they’ve gone into. On Tuesday they host  the Wagner Thunderbirds before going on the road to play the Clemens Buffaloes on Friday. Wagner enters the game as the #1 team in the city while Clemens is ranked third.

“It’s not gonna be easy we need to just stick to the game plan and keep playing hard,” said Peavy.

As the season prepares to wind down within the next couple of weeks the team looks to finish strong over the course of the next five games. There is only three home games remaining with the final one coming Feb. 9 against Judson. As for Tuesday, the game against Wagner will tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
