As we prepare to hit February, the varsity baseball team is getting ready to begin their season as they embark on their quest to bring home back-to-back district titles.

The team will look to lean on senior returning starters Mason Pierce, Cj Horn, Eric Reece, and Ethan Rivera.

Pierce should provide solid hitting after batting .333 last season while Horn, who was named San antonio Newcomer of the Year in his freshman season, looks to hold down the team from his catcher position.

Reece and River will be able to provide versatility for the team as they will have opportunities to play the field while also being the leading pitchers on the squad.

Some other players to look out for are juniors Canyon Martini, Rob Ruff, Colton Eilers, and Max Kloberdanz. Eilers and Kloberdanz saw some varsity time in tournament play last season and look to fill out the pitching rotation this year.

As for Ruff and Martini ,they are going to prepare to see their first varsity action after being on the JV last season, but have shown good strides in pre-season training thus far.

The teams first test comes today against the Churchill Chargers in their first scrimmage of the year. Churchill comes into game as the 3rd ranked team in the city in the preseason polls while having maybe the best pitching staff in the area with three pitchers committing to play at Texas, Texas A&M, and Houston respectively.

“It should be a good test to see where we are at,” said head coach Chad Koehl “It will give us a look to see how our younger guys do against a really good team.”

The scrimmage will be played today at 5:00 p.m. at home.
