Wrestling throttles regional competition

Girls place third overall and qualify for state tournament, Holley marks SV’s first regional placer.

Freshman Zarek Holley claims victory over an opponent at the Akins wrestling meet on Feb. 7 at home. Holley finished 6th overall at the regional tournament this past weekend at San Antonio Blossom, marking SV’s first boy Regional Placer.

The girls wrestling team dominated competition this past Saturday at the Region 4 tournament at San Antonio Blossom, taking home 3rd place in region with 95 team points. The team was led by individual Regional Champion, senior Kendall McGarity.

Regional runner up placers included, Lindsey Rittimann and Jessie Polk, Isabella Ruiz placed third. All four of the girls placed qualified for the state tournament, leading Smithson Valley to a second consecutive state tournament appearance in two years.  

The boys varsity squad was able to get its first ever Regional Placer, freshman Zarek Holley, by placing 6th overall in his weight division. Zarek missed qualifying for state competition by one match.

The upcoming state tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday in Houston at the Berry Center.

There will be a send off on Thursday at 1:15 p.m. at the high school.
