Heading in the final minutes of an area matchup Wednesday’s against Johnson, the boys soccer team led 1-0, on the road to a history-making trip to region.

However,  a  late goal in the final seconds of regulation and double overtime created a detour that eventually led back to the team’s 3-2 win.

“I felt very happy for the team and myself for going to the third round of the playoffs for the first time ever,” junior midfielder Carlos Castro said. “We’ve worked hard for the place we’re in at the moment and we will play harder and harder.”

The road to region now goes through Seguin today with a 7 p.m. playoff game against Lee. Lee is coming off a dominant 3-0 win over Schertz Clemens.

The tumultuous area playoff game featured its share of sparks, specifically the lightning delay Tuesday night at Farris Stadium. After five minutes of play, the game was delayed until Wednesday.

The Rangers’ single goal in the first half gave them the lead until four seconds left. A foul called on a Ranger player gave Johnson the free kick it needed to tie up the game.

Double overtime left the two teams deadlocked a 1-1 and forced penalty kicks to break the tie.

Goals by Jonathan Diaz, Nate Diaz and Cord Sabbatini gave the Rangers with the win while Blaine Leighton-Byrd saved two penalty kicks.
