After top finishes in some of their last three tournaments, both the boys’ and girls’ golf teams have made big improvements.

Twice the girls’ team finished in the top two in the tournaments it participated in since the beginning of the new year.

The team finished first in the Northside ISD Regional Preview at The Republic golf course on Jan. 29 and 30. Senior Brooklyn Sutton finished third overall with scores of 76 and 79. Senior Holly Mendez finished fifth overall with scores of 80 and 81.

At the Lady Matador Classic on Feb. 17 the team finished second overall. The girls’ team heads to Austin on March 11 and 12 to participate in the tournament hosted by Vandergrift.

“The girls have great talent,” coach Jason Pape said, “and even better work ethic and dedication.”

The boys’ team struggled in its first two tournaments of the new year, failing to place at either.

With a second place overall finish at the Northeast ISD invitational at La Loma on March 5, the team gained momentum and can get out of its slump. Junior Jordan Stagg led the team with a score of 79. Juniors Michael Sanders and Keith Shoemake each shot a score of 84.

“The boys just need to take initiative to get it done,” Pape said. “Right now the girls’ team overshadows them, but they can be just as good.”

Its next tournament is March 22 at The Republic in the Northeast ISD invitational.
