Girls basketball advances
February 12, 2019
In what could have been her final game in a Smithson Valley jersey, senior guard Ashley Adaszczyk stepped up in a big way to lead the Lady Rangers to a 52-38 win against Austin Bowie high school.
The Lady Rangers jumped out to a hot start behind the arc, going 7-of-14 from three and jumping to a 38-17 lead at halftime. Despite a strong second half by the Bulldogs, they were unable to make a dent in the Rangers lead. The closest the game ever got was the final 14-point lead Smithson Valley finished the game with.
Junior Anika Mcgarity led the team with 16 points, going 3-8 from three to tie the school record of 73. Adaszczyk added 11 points with 3 threes and 5 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Freshman Gabrielle Elliott chipped in with 7 points and 13 rebounds.
The girls will face the winner of Tuesday’s game between Clark and Johnson. This will be the Rangers’ second straight year making it to the area round of the playoffs.
