Horse judging team enjoys national acclaim

The nation’s second place FFA horse judging team included Cat Fadok, Katie Young, Clayton Elbel, Madison Oquin and Lindsey Raba.

The horse evaluating team, consisting of sophomore Clayton Elbel, juniors Madison Oquin and Katie Young, and former seniors Catherine Fedok and Lindsey Raba, won FFA 2016 National Reserve Champions in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 22.

Elbel also won the title of National Champion.

Horse evaluation involves judging halter classes on appearance, performance, and quality of movement.

“I’ve been judging since I was 8 so it’s an accomplishment.” Elbel said. “We put so much work, motivation, drive, energy, and dedication.”

The team advanced to the national contest by placing at the area and state contests in the 2015-16 school year.

“I was overjoyed to be part of something so amazing and to be a part of a national champion team.” Elbel said.

Despite the long hours of practicing, the team members needed time to embrace the enormity of their accomplishment.

“It was very overwhelming,” Oquin said, “We were shocked.”
