After the first two tournaments of its inaugural season, the wrestling team is gaining momentum heading into the bulk of its season.

“So far the season has gone pretty good,” senior Christian Perez said, “being our first year and all we went out there and made a name for ourselves.”

The team competed in the Capital Classic at the Delco Center in Austin on Nov. 18-19, then at the Charger Classic at Churchill on Dec. 2-3. The team finished seventh overall of 34 teams at the Charger Classic.

Team success was due in part to the performance of senior Ariana Mendoza, who went 3-0 in both tournaments. Mendoza placed first in both meets and is now 6-0 overall.

Lindsey Rittiman and Kendall Magarity were the only other members of
the team to place in either tournament. Rittiman finished third in the Capital Classic, while McGarity placed second in the Charger Classic.

“The work ethic of the team is awesome,” senior Alex Espinoza said. “Everyone is always giving 100 percent at practice, and we are learning quickly.”

Anyone outside the program would not know this was the team’s inaugural season, by looking at the confidence and preparation of the team.

“I think everyone on the team had a good chance at placing in districts,” Perez said. “With Coach (Brett) Wandler as our coach I think we all have a good chance at going to state.”
