Evolving, cheating, discovering: the world of A.I.

Artificial intelligence threatens academic integrity

Over the last few years, the world has experienced major developments in artificial intelligence.  Many programs have been made for the public, including ChatGPT, Dall-E, Mini and Vall-E.

These programs want to accomplish the same thing; make challenging things easier for the user.

ChatGPT  is a chatbot that uses dialogue format to answer questions and craft in-depth essays in the form of a detailed prompt response.

“It’s an A.I. that helps with general life,” an anonymous story said.“It just saves my time and is a fast and easy way to get some work done.”

The program was launched on Nov.30, 2022 and on Dec. 4 it was recorded there were already users on the waiting list.

Worldwide, many teachers and staff are having to look closer and analyze each essay for signs of the use of ChatGPT.

“A teacher is going to know whether something is plagiarized or not,” English teacher Austin Petray said. “What happens is we get used to our students and their behavior. When students turn in papers that are plagiarized or A.I. generated, there’s a difference on how they usually write.”

Students are using this program to do their work instead of doing it themselves.

The news site “Fortune”  recently produced an article about how ChatGPT could lead students to be “lazy.”  Students may start to rely on this site stating students may start to lose the ability to spell and write properly.

“As far as preventing it, one thing we do is write essays in class, or at least just their first draft,” Petray said. “If the first draft is significantly different from the final, then we take a closer look.”

ChatGPT is affecting things outside of school too.

Renowned singer-songwriter Nick Cave recently went on a tangent about how ChatGPT imitating songwriting was a “grotesque mockery of what it means to be human.”

Songs arise out of suffering, by which I mean they are predicated upon the complex, internal human struggle of creation and, well, as far as I know, algorithms don’t feel. Data doesn’t suffer.

— Nick Cave

Cave makes a point about how songwriting is fueled by emotion, human emotion, something an AI algorithm can’t comprehend.

Dall-E  and Vall-E are also other programs that have come out to the public recently. These programs try to accomplish the same thing as ChatGPT, but instead producing art and music.

Dall-E is a program where anyone can type anything into the prompt bar to generate an image  out of those words.

Art teachers around the world have been looking into this app, although some are unaware of this powerful tool, such as campus art teacher Lizette Floyd.

“I feel as though it can be a good resource combining with the students’ creativity,” Floyd said. “I think technology is such a big part of our life now, there is no way to get rid of it.”

Dalle-E is currently in a very early version known as “Dall-E Mini” while the improved “Dall-E 2” is still only available to few people. It supposedly produces more realistic and higher quality outcomes from the given prompts.

Vall-E works with voices and mimics celebrities and important figures.

“VALL-E emerges in-context learning capabilities and can be used to synthesize high-quality personalized speech with only a 3-second enrolled recording of an unseen speaker as an acoustic prompt.”(Vall-E Demo Hub).

This allows people to create their own segments of recording saying whatever they would like in whichever voice they want.

With how quickly A.I. has been growing it’s undoubtedly going to continue to change and evolve into the next decade, producing higher quality results.

The focus for this new batch of artificial intelligence is making it accessible, but the biggest concern is for creators. If anyone can produce an oil painting replicating Da Vinci, a short story imitating H.P. Lovecraft, or a song copying Kendrick Lamar in a matter of seconds, that’s bound to affect not only the market for these art forms, but take away from the smaller, talented artists in these fields.

These A.I. ‘s are still in the early stages of development, they make very obvious mistakes and can’t perfect what it is to be human.

As of right now, Dall-E 2 is going to come out in the near future. Microsoft already produced ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Vall-E, but they are not done yet. Their main goal is to make large A.I. models for data sciences and business customers.

The world of technology is rapidly growing, and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
