In its District 25-6A opening, the football team lost at Steele, 42-16, on Sept. 25.

The game started an hour late because of multiple lightning delays. Once the game was under way, it did not take long for the Knights to get points on the board. Only two minutes in, Steele running back Bryson Denley took a handoff into the endzone from four yards out.

“Steele’s an outstanding team and deserves to win,” Coach Larry Hill said, “But we felt like we could have performed better.”

Sophomore Trevon Moehrig lined up deep to return Steele’s kickoff, but after a hard hit, Moehrig fumbled the ball. Steele began its second drive inside the team’s red zone, and junior running back, Travell Lumpkin, ran for a one-yard touchdown, putting Steele up 14-0.

After two more Steele touchdowns, the team got on the board with a 26-yard pass from Adkins to senior receiver Derek Housler. The offense stayed on the field after the touchdown and successfully attempted a two-point conversion with a pass from Adkins to senior fullback Lane Raulston.

Steele scored once again before halftime, on a 10-yard run by Denley, making the score 35-8 at the half.

Back from halftime, Steele scored its last touchdown on a 14-yard run by Denley, and the team scored its off a 9-yard pass by Adkins to Raulston.

After a successful two-point conversion pass from Adkins to Housler, the team lined up for an onside kick. The kick rolled out of bounds, giving Steele the ball back with just more than two minutes remaining. Steele ran out the clock, ending the first district game for both teams this season.

The team looked to get its first district win at home on Oct. 2 against 2-2 Canyon, who had a bye and had not started district play.
