With the upcoming release of the Switch on March 3, fans Nintendo or not excitedly await what the new console has to offer. Following the less than popular Wii U, Nintendo needed to ‘switch’ up their strategy. The Switch’s mobile form looks very similar to the Wii U, with a touch screen in the middle and controllers on the side. However, when docked the new Joy-Con controllers can join together to become a controller. These are just a taste of the new features it has to offer.

Unlike many consoles, the Switch has very few launch titles (Breath of the wild, Just Dance 2017, Skylanders Imaginators and others), but has a long line of titles that will trickle in throughout the year such as Arms in Spring, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in Fall, Super Mario Odyssey in the holiday season and others to following suit. However finding a Switch to play these games is the real challenge.

“I’m getting it as soon as it’s available. But everywhere I go pre-orders are all sold out,” sophomore Jesus Tirado said.

The Switch faces one major problem: third-party support (games from developers other than Nintendo). Developers can be fearful of a new console and its ability to perform.

When asked about Mass Effect Andromeda on the Switch, the Producer said “we’re not planning on it. If the Switch launches and everyone’s just yammering for Mass Effect, who knows? We never want to close doors like that.”

The small storage also is a big problem with the total storage of the Switch holding 32 GB. Luckily, it features a microSD slot to help provide storage expansion but the system does not provide one with the console. Prices for the cards can reach up to $30 for 64 GB or $45 for 128GB.

“I think the Switch cartridges are a nice touch but I don’t understand how you would download large games on a system with such small space,” senior Joseph Miller said.

Nintendo is also changing their multiplayer system. While the older consoles had local and online with the console, the Switch is now paralleling Xbox’s gold system in a membership. This is where online play and voice chat will cost a monthly subscription fee. The subscription will also include a monthly game download and exclusive deals.
