Finding beasts, not as fantastic

J.K. Rowling’s first screenplay receives less than stellar reviews

Finding beasts, not as fantastic

Jack Mobley, Staff Writer

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” J.K. Rowling’s first attempt at screenwriting, was – although creative and unique – overall subpar to the rest of the wizarding world we’ve all come to know and love. The movie has a fresh feel, set in 1920’s America, but honestly it wasn’t enough to salvage the film entirely. The acting by Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston is average with little character growth, and mostly there just as comical relief to the slow pace and blandness of the plot. “Fantastic Beasts’” only saving graces were the magical concepts and special effects, which have to be attributed to the success of the Harry Potter franchise and Rowling’s general creativity. “Fantastic Beasts” left me disappointed and missing the magic Rowling’s films used to bring to the theater.
