The girls soccer team survived a scare from a feisty O’Connor as they went to penalty kicks before defeating the Panthers 4-2 in a thriller at home last Friday.

The game started off fairly slowly with both teams turning the ball over back and forth. With about ten minutes left in the first half the team had several good touches in scoring position but couldn’t seem to capitalize.

It was defensive battle with both teams pushing to the brink of scoring numerous times in the second half but neither being able to seal the deal. After 80 minutes of play the score was still knotted up at 0-0. In the overtime period the action was much of the same with both teams having equally good opportunities to score and end the game but not being able to.

Exhaustion was definitely affecting the teams late in the game as it appeared the pace slowed down and sent the game into penalty kicks. Once in penalty the kicks the team scored their first two attempts while O’Connor only made one of two. It was on the second to last attempt when the team put their final goal into the back of the net to take a 4-2 lead and claim victory.

The team’s next game is in the second round of the playoffs against the Reagan Rattlers. The game will be held on Friday at Canyon High School at 6 p.m.
