Best things to do in San Antonio this month

Rebecca Covington, Opinion Editor

With San Antonio’s Fiesta celebration coming up on April 19-30, it’s easy to label it as the only interesting event that happens in San Antonio.

People often rave about how fun and unique Austin, Houston, and Dallas are, but San Antonio is often left out of the loop. Teenagers and young adults may frequent Pearl Brewery or the Riverwalk, but there is much more going beyond the obvious.

Here are the best things to do in San Antonio in upcoming weeks.

On Saturday, the San Antonio Public Library Foundation is hosting a book festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. complete with hundreds of authors covering a wide array of audiences and topics.

  • Museums

For the tricentennial anniversary of the city of San Antonio, museums are hosting exhibits that celebrate Mexican heritage and the melting pot history of San Antonio. These museums include the McNay Art Museum and the San Antonio Art Museum.

  • First Fridays

Art exhibits, crafts, food vendors, and live music cover South Alamo Street and lead to galleries in the contemporary art museum, Blue Star Contemporary museum and the King William Historic District on the first Friday of every month in the Southtown Art District.

  • Second Fridays

Similar to First Fridays, the Tobin Hills Art Alliance hosts an art event on the second Saturday of every month at the intersection at East Dewey Place, Josephine street, and North Saint Mary’s Street. Sculptures and art are on display from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Second Saturdays

In Southtown Art District where First Fridays occur, art galleries and performances take place on the second Saturday of every month. There is live music, art displays, performances and film screenings at South Flores Street and Lone Star Boulevard.
